Mixed doubles in Budapest

Last weekend the seventh and eighth run of the Porsche MOBIL1 Supercup took place in the outskirts of Budapest. Already on Saturday afternoon the race of Barcelona, which has been canceled in the last second, was repeated. MRS youngster Philipp Eng and the Swede Mats Karlsson started for the team from Lonsee.

The qualifying took place on Friday late afternoon, where in 45 minutes the starting grid for the race on Saturday and Sunday was determined. For both MRS drivers it was a premiere on the challenging Hungaroring, even more remarkable is the performance, both showed. At the end Philipp Eng positioned himself on the tenth starting position for the race on Saturday and on the eighth starting position for the race on Sunday with a lag of only a few tenths to the top. “We have keenly improved compared to the free practice. For me it was the first time on this track on a Porsche and therefore I struggled a little bit. But the car was really good and with P8 and P10 we have good starting positions”, said a happy Philipp Eng. Also the Swedish TV star Mats Karlsson considerably improved his lap times compared to the free practice and reached the starting positions 18 and 17.

The race on Saturday went extremely well for Philipp Eng. Until the half of the race Philipp Eng fought position for position with remarkable overtaking maneuvers to the sixth position and was able to defend his position to the finish. Eng’s teammate Mats Karlsson became a good 15th and gained points at his Hungary debut.

On Sunday morning the second race started by midsummer temperatures. Unfortunately the race of Philipp Eng was over after the first half. Lying on P8 he was hit on the rear wheel by an opponent and thereby the suspension was damaged. Mats Karlsson was able to improve his performance and finished the race as very good twelfth.

Karsten Molitor: „Actually we are really happy with the race weekend, although Philipp Eng missed out in the second race. And it is less useful that the initiator of the collision is punished with a grid penalty for the next race. At the first race on Saturday Philipp impressed with a great performance. For our Swedish guest the Supercup Weekend was for sure a great experience, he scored twice, what do you want more.”
