American Le Mans Series: Overall win for RS Spyder, GT lead extended
At round eight in Mosport/Canada, Klaus Graf and Porsche works pilot Romain Dumas drove the Porsche RS Spyder of Muscle Milk Team Cytosport to the second overall victory this season, after missing out on first place by just one second a week earlier in Elkhart Lake. Success for Porsche in the well-supported GT class, too: Works drivers Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long secured their fourth win on the race track near Toronto in the 911 GT3 RSR of Flying Lizard Motorsports and travel to the final in Road Atlanta, Georgia (2 Oct.) with a comfortable points’ buffer. With the latest win, Porsche regained the lead of the GT manufacturers’ classification.

Le Mans Series: Lieb and Lietz net victory number three
With a 9.9-second advantage after 1,000 kilometres of racing, Porsche factory pilots Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz won the fourth of five Le Mans Series rounds on the Hungaroring (22 August). Over the entire distance, the Felbermayr-Proton drivers in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR were locked in a clinch with Ferraris. After six hours they brought home their third win of the season from four starts. Lieb and Lietz travel to the season final in Silverstone (12 September) as points’ leaders. The Porsche success was made perfect by works driver Patrick Pilet and Raymond Narac yielding third in the 911 GT3 RSR fielded by IMSA Performance Matmut.

British GT Championship: Trackspeed Porsche victorious in Silverstone
At the eighth of 15 races of the British GT Championship in Silverstone (15 August), David Ashburn pushed home to victory from tenth on the grid in Trackspeed Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in a 25-strong field. 2.4 seconds separated Ashburn from the second-placed Ferrari after nearly 300 kilometres of intense racing. Richard Westbrook put in an impressive drive in Trackspeed’s second Porsche by setting the fastest race lap. Towards the end, however, Westbrook had to take the sting out of his pace which shuffled him from second down to fourth.

Porsche Mobil1 Supercup: Nick Tandy keeps title race open
Britain’s Sean Edwards of Team Abu Dhabi by tolimit won round nine in Spa-Francorchamps from pole eleven seconds ahead of Jaap van Lagen. In the title fight, his compatriot Nick Tandy pushed through the field from 16th on the grid to finish sixth. Tandy, who has already won the BBS Rookie Classification, still has a small chance to snatch the title from points’ leader René Rast at the final in Monza (12 September). Rast finished third at Spa.

Carrera Cup Deutschland: Nick Tandy hunts favourites in Zandvoort
At the Dutch Circuit Park Zandvoort, Nick Tandy scored an emphatic win at round six (22 August) with a 14.2-second advantage. With his third win of the season, the 25-year-old Konrad Motorsport pilot moved back into second overall and shrunk the gap to points’ leader Nicolas Armindo, who after his string of three victories only finished tenth. Second place for guest starter Jaap van Lagen made the double win for Konrad Motorsport complete. Uwe Alzen claimed third and now ranks third in the points, level with Tandy leading up to the race in Brands Hatch (5 September).

Carrera Cup Great Britain: Two wins for Michael Caine in top duel
At races 13 and 14 in Silverstone (22 August), points’ leader and nine-time winner this season, Tim Harvey, had no antidote to his toughest rival Michael Caine, who brought home victory from both races ahead of Harvey in the Motorbase Performance team 911 GT3 Cup. Thanks to his third and fourth win, Caine reduced the gap to Harvey with six races left on the calendar.

Race notes: Porsche Cars Great Britain again supports two young drivers in 2011 with each receiving £50,000 as part of the “Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain Scholarship Programme.” More information: www.porsche.com/uk +++ Works pilot Wolf Henzler and Brian Sellers win the Michelin Green X Challenge environmental award at the ALMS race in Elkhart Lake (22 August) with the 911 GT3 RSR run by Falken Tire. +++ In Elkhart Lake, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Tim Pappas snatch victory number four in the GTC class in the 911 GT3 Cup. +++ Niclas Kentenich and Sebastian Asch finish races eleven and twelve of the ADAC GT Master on the Nürburgring (28/29 August) in their a-workx Porsche in second and third. +++ After twelve races, Robin Rudholm leads the Carrera Cup Scandinavia by 33 points over Fredrik Larsson. Four rounds are still on the calendar, with a maximum of 120 points still up for grabs. At races 11 and 12 in Karlskoga (13/14 August) both top drivers yielded victory. +++ GT3 Cup Challenge Brasil, Interlagos (28/29 August): Ex-Formula 1 pilot Ricardo Rosset extends his lead in the 997 class with win number three of the season at race nine. Ricardo Baptista wins race ten. André Posses remains unbeaten with his fifth victory from five races in the 996 class. +++ Second for Tim Bergmeister/Frank Schmickler in the Porsche 911 GT3 R at the tenth of 14 races in the ADAC GT Masters on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (15 August). +++ Matt Kingsley remains unbeaten with the 911 GT3 Cup of the Action Tyres and More team after three races of the GT3 Cup Challenge in Morgan Park, Queensland, (14/15 August). With this, the reigning champion and clear points’ leader now has a string of nine straight victories to his credit.

Porsche back in the lead with double win

PRESS Porsche Motorsport/American Le Mans Series, round 8 in Mosport, Canada

Porsche back in the lead with double win

Stuttgart. The American Le Mans Series race on Canada’s Mosport circuit ended with an emphatic double victory for Porsche. On the demanding circuit close to Toronto, Porsche works driver Romain Dumas (France) and Klaus Graf (Germany) clinched the second overall victory this season at the wheel of the Porsche RS Spyder. In the strongly represented GT class, victory also went to the sports car manufacturer from Zuffenhausen: Porsche factory pilots Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) celebrated their fourth win this year with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR to extend their points’ lead heading to the Road Atlanta final on 2 October. At the same time, Porsche once again reclaimed the top spot of the manufacturers’ classification.

One week ago in Elkhart Lake, Klaus Graf had missed out on overall victory by just one second. In Mosport, he planted the RS Spyder on pole position and, with his teammate Romain Dumas, secured the second overall win this season after Lime Rock for the Muscle Milk Team Cytosport squad. The winning racer from Weissach maintained the lead from start to finish, and never even relinquished it during pit stops and driver changes. After a good two hours of racing, the RS Spyder was leading by almost one-lap, when a safety car was deployed due to a barrier being ripped from its bolts in an accident. Only then could the pursuers catch up. Shortly afterwards, the race was red-flagged. Workmen had tried in vain to repair the guard railing for an hour, before the race organiser decided to cancel the event.

“What a great day. Our pace was good over the whole weekend, but we still tried to find the best set-up. Once we found it, the RS Spyder ran with incredible perfection,” said Klaus Graf. “The entire crew were extremely well prepared for this race. This became very clear when we almost lapped the second-placed Honda. Having Romain Dumas, as one of the world’s best race drivers, as a teammate was a huge pleasure.” The Frenchman also enjoyed his comeback to the American Le Mans Series. “In the first five laps I pulled clear by ten seconds, then I got word from the pits to conserve fuel and tyres,” he said. “Driving the Porsche RS Spyder at the head of the field in Mosport – for a race driver it doesn’t get better than that.”

In the fiercely-contested GT class, Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long are shortly before successfully defending their title. After claiming their fourth win of the season with Flying Lizard Motorsports’ Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, they travel to the final round of the season holding a comfortable points’ margin. Right from the green flag in Mosport, Patrick Long was the dominating force over strong opposition from Ferrari, BMW and Chevrolet. He handed the successful racer to Joerg Bergmeister after an hour, who then rejoined the race action in second. It didn’t take long for Bergmeister to regain the lead which he proceeded to defend against heavy attacks to the flag.

“Having a 22-point advantage is a great buffer and it makes us feel very confident for the final at Road Atlanta. After this victory we feel we could even win the championship,” said Joerg Bergmeister, who now has four Mosport victories to his credit. Patrick Long is also confident heading to the last race of the year: “By now we’ve had an amazing season. We simply have the speed and strategy. This win is the best motivation heading to Road Atlanta. But until then, we have plenty to do. After all, we don’t just want to win the title again for us, but also to contribute to Porsche winning the manufacturers’ classification.”

In the cockpit of the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Team Falken Tire, Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler (Germany) and Bryan Sellers (USA) secured seventh place. Americans Darren Law and Seth Neiman saw the flag with the second 911 GT3 RSR of Flying Lizard Motorsports in ninth.

The 9th and final round of the American Le Mans Series takes place on 2 October on the Road Atlanta race track in Braselton, Georgia.

Facts and Figures

This is the American Le Mans Series

The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) was created in 1999 for sports prototypes and GT vehicles. The regulations correspond to those of the Le Mans 24 hour race. Nine races in the USA and Canada make up this year’s calendar. Traditional highlights are the Sebring 12 hour race and the 1,000 mile “Petit Le Mans” at Road Atlanta.

Sports prototypes and standard sports cars make up the starter field: These are divided into four classes:
LMP class: In this category, sports prototypes from the former LMP1 and LMP2 classes are classified together. The difference in performance is intended to be offset as far as possible (e.g. via restriction adjustments). The Porsche RS Spyder competes in this class.
GT class: Contesting this class (formerly GT2) are slightly modified standard sports cars with 440 to 460 hp and a minimum weight of 1,125 – 1,325 kilograms (e.g. Porsche 911 GT3 RSR).
LMPC class: This newly-created class is a prototype brand trophy series for the ORECA FLM 09.
GTC class: Replacing the ALMS Challenge, this class is open for various model years of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

All race cars start together but are classified separately. This ensures racing that is exciting and constantly changing. Points are awarded only for placings in each class.

Bernhard, Dumas and Rockenfeller pilot Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

Bernhard, Dumas and Rockenfeller pilot Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

Stuttgart. Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) return to the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) as teammates. The pair join forces on the “Road Atlanta” race track for the season final on 2 October to pilot the innovative Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid, which features two electric motors at the front axle each developing 60 kilowatts to supplement the 480 horsepower normally-aspirated rear-engine. The third driver is former Porsche-Junior and current Audi factory pilot Mike Rockenfeller (Germany). Together, the trio won the Le Mans 24 Hours in June. In January, Rockenfeller claimed victory in a Porsche-powered Daytona Prototype at the Daytona 24 hour race.

At the 1,000 mile race on the outskirts of the US city of Atlanta, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid will not be eligible for points, as hybrid technology is not yet included in the GT regulations. “Our priorities are to further develop the hybrid technology and to optimise the fuel consumption under racing conditions. Nevertheless, I’m very interested to see how we compare to the GT2 cars,” says Timo Bernhard. “Nowhere is the competition in the GT segment as hard as it is here in the USA,” adds Dumas.

As a driver pairing, Bernhard and Dumas have already notched up many historical victories, including the ALMS title in the LMP2 prototype class in 2007 and 2008, the overall win at the 2008 Sebring 12 Hours, as well as three overall victories at the Nürburgring 24 hour race from 2007 to 2009.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid, that demonstrated the potential of its groundbreaking technology over 22 hours and 15 minutes at this year’s Nürburgring 24 hour race and led the overall classification for more than eight hours, expressly typifies the philosophy of “Porsche Intelligent Performance”. Under braking, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid converts kinetic energy into electrical energy and stores it in a flywheel. During acceleration, this energy is automatically delivered to the front wheels, supporting the combustion engine. This leads to a reduction in fuel consumption and increases the cruising range. Moreover, drivers can manually utilise the stored energy with a boost-paddle on the steering wheel for overtaking.

Packed calendar for Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas

Stuttgart. A diverse second half of the season awaits Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France). Internationally, the 2007 and 2008 ALMS champions and reigning Le Mans winners compete in various categories.

After his successful comeback to the American Le Mans Series last weekend at the wheel of the Porsche RS Spyder, where he secured second place with Klaus Graf (Germany) for the Muscle Milk Team Cytosport in Elkhart Lake, Timo Bernhard now pilots an Audi R15 TDI with Dindo Capello (Italy) at the season final of the Le Mans Series in Silverstone on 12 September. “I certainly can’t complain about a lack of variety in my 2010 season,” says Bernhard. “My racing calendar consists of one motorsport highlight after another.”

Romain Dumas teams up with Klaus Graf in the cockpit of the RS Spyder this coming weekend at the penultimate round of the ALMS season in Mosport (Canada), and will pilot the Audi R15 with Capello at the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in Zhuhai (China) on 7 November. “I very much look forward to racing the cars in which I celebrated my greatest achievements in prototype sport,” says Dumas.

In addition to their diverse schedule on the race track, a new rally challenge awaits the two world class pilots. Timo Bernhard will test Matthias Kahle’s Skoda Fabia S2000 at the shakedown of the ADAC Saarland Rally, a round of the German Rally Championship. For several years, Bernhard has driven a VW Golf Kitcar in his spare time, and has already won a number of regional rallies.

Romain Dumas’s calendar also includes some testing in rally cars. Several weeks ago he began to assemble a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS which will replace the 911 GT3 RS (996) that he has driven to now. Dumas has also climbed to the top of the podium at several rallies in France.

American Le Mans Series, round 7 in Elkhart Lake, USA

Porsche wins environmental award and crucial points in title fight

Stuttgart. A successful weekend for Porsche in the American Le Mans Series: On the legendary Road America, Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) claimed second place with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and duly extended their points’ lead. In the LMP class, Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard (Germany) and his compatriot Klaus Graf missed out on victory with the Porsche RS Spyder by just one second. Porsche’s success at round seven of the race series featuring the world’s fastest sports cars was made perfect with victory in the Michelin Green X Challenge environmental classification. The 911 GT3 RSR with Porsche factory pilot Wolf Henzler (Germany) and Bryan Sellers (USA) was the vehicle with the best overall efficiency in its class.

The finale on the 6.514 kilometre classic race track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, was packed with excitement and drama. With an inspired drive at the wheel of the Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 GT3 RSR, Patrick Long fended off fierce charges from his pursuers to secure crucial points with Joerg Bergmeister towards the title. The pair not only defended their points’ lead, but also managed to extend it further. The outcome was incredibly tight: The Porsche works driver saw the flag a mere two and a half seconds ahead of the third placed vehicle – and just two and a half seconds off claiming their fourth win of the season.

“That was without doubt the toughest hour I’ve ever experienced on a race track,” declared Patrick Long. “At the restart after the last safety car phase we were in the lead and it was tough seeing how the BMW overtook on the outside on the finish straight. But I had to stay totally focussed, after all I had some of the world’s best sports car pilots breathing down my neck. It was very difficult keeping them at bay and at the same time chasing the leader. I’ve never driven such a crazy line like in this last hour of racing. Non-stop full-tilt. We fought for every inch. I’ve never been so happy to finish second, but there is always a first time. Today was such a day. We are all over the moon about this result.”

His teammate Joerg Bergmeister, who has notched up four victories in Elkhart Lake over the years, was in full agreement: “With second position we’ve extended our lead in the points and I’m certain we’re going to need every point we can get in the fight for the title,” he said. “I lost several places at the start, as some of our rivals were quicker on the straights. I managed to make up several of the positions, because after the first pit stop our car ran really well. Our team also contributed to gaining some positions with their brilliant pit stops today. These boys did a fantastic job.”

The pressure in the LMP class was even more intense, with Klaus Graf and the RS Spyder from Muscle Milk Team Cytosport gunning to what looked like a secure third win of the season in the final race laps. But with three corners to go to the finish, the winning racer from Weissach, with which his teammate Timo Bernhard celebrated a total of 16 victories and two title wins in the American Le Mans Series between 2006 and 2008, ran out of fuel. The Porsche pilots, who had joined forces for the first time, had to settle for position two – beaten by a mere second.

“We tried to survive the last 30 minutes without refuelling and to save fuel where we could,” said Klaus Graf. “The two safety car phases helped but we were aware it wouldn’t be easy to keep the strong Lola behind us. If the fuel had lasted the distance we would have won. But in the third to last corner our car suddenly lost power and I just made it over the finish line. Despite missing out on this victory we could still become champions. And that is a great situation to be in with two races to go.”

For Timo Bernhard, his return to the American Le Mans Series with the RS Spyder was a one-off guest appearance. “Normally it’s difficult to work with a new team for just one race weekend, but the crew from Muscle Milk Team Cytosport made it easy for me. I felt great from the very first moment,” said the 2010 Le Mans winner. “The race didn’t run so well early on. The quicker cars edged past me on the straight. Afterwards I was able to match their pace and despite a slight oversteer I even moved up the field to second place by the time I came in to pit. The driver change ran as smoothly as the pit stops and we gained another position through the super work of our crew. Even if we didn’t win I think that whole team can be proud of their effort.”

At the wheel of the second Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Flying Lizard Motorsports, Darren Law (USA) and Seth Neiman (USA) saw the flag in ninth – one spot ahead of Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers. The Team Falken Tire still had good reason to celebrate: For the first time, their 911 GT3 RSR won the Michelin Green X Challenge as the vehicle with the best overall efficiency. Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) and Timothy Pappas (USA) brought home another win: The reigning Supercup champion secured his fourth win of the season in the GTC class with his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
