Audi to compete with two R18 e-tron quattro cars at Sebring

Audi to compete with two R18 e-tron quattro cars at Sebring

·         Last run of an LMP1 car of the brand at the 12-hour classic in Florida
·         Farewell event with historic vehicle exhibition
·         Audi aims for eleventh overall win at Sebring with R18 e-tron quattro
Ingolstadt, January 21, 2013 - March 16, 2013 will mark the end of an era as the world’s highest-caliber sports cars are running at the tradition-steeped Sebring 12 Hours for the last time. Before the Le Mans prototypes of the LMP1 class are no longer permitted at this event from 2014 on, Audi is coming full circle in Florida. In 1999, the first LMP sports car of the brand celebrated its debut on the former airfield - and now two prototypes emblazoned with the four rings will arguably be competing there for the last time.

"We’re in for a very emotional race weekend on which we’ll be taking the fans along on a journey into our past," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "Sebring is where Audi’s sports car era that has been so successful began. We expect that with two current hybrid models we’ll be battling for overall victory at the 12-hour race for the last time this year. At the same time, on the fringes of the race, the fans can look forward to seeing four other race cars and several race drivers who made history at Sebring with Audi."

In addition to a 2012-generation Audi R18 e-tron quattro, an updated version of the prototype will be on the grid in Florida. Marcel Fässler/Oliver Jarvis/Benoît Tréluyer (CH/GB/F) and Lucas di Grassi/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish (BR/DK/GB) will be driving the two hybrid race cars in the race. With six victories under his belt, Kristensen holds the record at this event.

In 13 runs at the sports car classic to date, Audi has clinched 22 podium positions including ten overall victories. Right on the debut, on March 20, 1999, three Audi drivers - Michele Alboreto/Dindo Capello/Stefan Johansson - were on the podium. Audi Sport Team Joest was the race team back then, as it is today.

As part of the program for the endurance race that has been held since 1952 Audi will be treating the fans to an exhibition in March reflecting the brand’s entire sports car era. An Audi R8 represents the successful period from 2000 to 2005 whereas the R10 TDI paved the way for diesel power from 2006 to 2008. The R15 TDI won there in 2009 on making its debut, and the winning car from last year - the R18 TDI - can be marveled at as well.

Former Audi factory drivers who were successful at Sebring will be on hand to sign autographs for fans as well as for pictures and interviews. This way, Audi wishes to thank the ardent sports car enthusiasts in the United States for having been loyal to the brand for so many years.

FIA GT SERIES IS GO FOR 2013

FIA GT SERIES IS GO FOR 2013

FIA GT SERIES IS GO FOR 2013

SRO Motorsports Group and the FIA have announced today details for a newly named 2013 FIA GT Series which will preserve the highly competitive sprint-format of the former GT1 World Championship and bring together the most professional GT teams and drivers from Europe and beyond.
After months of discussions with the FIA and GT teams, SRO Motorsports Group and the FIA have finalised details for 2013. In light of the on-going economic downturn in Europe, a more limited programme will be run in 2013 with six key events. Only one of the races will be run outside of Europe and is to be held in the Middle East.
Ten two-car teams have already confirmed their intention to participate in the new series, making the target of 24 entries attainable for the 2013 season. These are former World Championship teams Belgian Audi Club Team WRT from Belgium, Vita4One Racing from Germany with BMW, Reiter Engineering from Germany with Lamborghini and Sunred from Spain most likely with Audi.
They will be joined by the Spa and Nürburgring 24hrs winning team Phoenix Racing from Germany with Audi and by former European Championship regulars HDC from the Czech Republic with Mercedes, Prospeed Competition from Belgium with Porsche, Novadriver from Portugal with Audi.
New comer Rodrive Competições from Portugal is working on a programme to run two Fords in partnership with Lambda Performance.
Making the headlines, nine times World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb will be racing with his own Sebastien Loeb Racing Team from France with McLaren.
In addition to these ten teams, SRO is also proud to announce that Antonio Hermann’s BMW Team Brazil has also expressed a strong intention to race in the FIA GT Series this season with a stellar line up of Brazilian drivers.
A number of experienced French teams, namely Hexis Racing with McLaren, Sofrev Auto Sport with Ferrari and Sainteloc Racing with Audi, have already confirmed they will take advantage of the opportunity offered for race-by-race entries to be on the grid for the opening round, at Nogaro on Easter-weekend.
A host of other teams are also working on finalising a programme for the 2013 season and they will be announced in the coming weeks. Final entry list will be release on the 1 st February, after the official closing date of entries.
The FIA GT format and regulations will be very similar to those of the former FIA GT1 World Championship, with the only significant difference being the introduction of a specific class for Pro-Am and young driver pairings. This format was successfully explored in 2012 when a combination of the GT1 World and GT3 European grids raced together at some events.

SRO founder and CEO, Stephane Ratel commented:
“After three challenging years in promoting the FIA GT1 World Championship, we are pleased to have devised a realistic and credible platform that will bring together a strong, competitive and quality field for 2013.
European events selected on their ability to deliver large and visible crowds, an overseas closing event to keep an exotic flavour; a strong mix of full Pro, Pro-Am and young driver pairings, as well as a focus on improving the series coverage will lay solid foundations for future GT growth.
Together with the FIA and with the support of the teams, we are confident in the potential of this re-designed GT Sprint package that will be known as the FIA GT Series.”
The calendar for the 2013 FIA GT Series is as follows:
1st April: Nogaro, France
21st April: Zolder, Belgium
14th July: Zandvoort, Netherlands
18th August: Slovakia Ring, Slovakia
13th October: Navarra, Spain
16th or 23rd November: Middle East (date and location to be confirmed)
The TV package for the FIA GT Series will be announced shortly.
In parallel with the 2013 FIA GT Series, the Blancpain Endurance Series will continue its phenomenal success at five key events, including the iconic Spa 24 hours and Nürburgring 1000kms.

McLAREN GT CONFIRMS DETAILS OF ENHANCED 12C GT3 TO COMPETE GLOBALLY IN 2013

McLAREN GT CONFIRMS DETAILS OF ENHANCED 12C GT3 TO COMPETE GLOBALLY IN 2013

  • Additional production run of the 12C GT3 confirmed to compete globally
  • Revisions designed to improve overall efficiency and reliability
  • 12C GT3 competitive debut season summary available to view at the official McLaren Automotive YouTube channel: http://youtu.be/72jgg4BqYsY
As was confirmed at the close of last year, McLaren GT will produce further examples of the 12C GT3 available to compete in the 2013 season.  These new models are eligible for all GT3 championships and, for the first time, see the 12C GT3 available for global competition.
The 2012 season saw the 12C GT3 take part in 98 separate race events, and this was converted into 19 victories and a further 19 podium finishes for the 13 McLaren GT customer teams – a remarkable achievement for the car making its competitive debut. During the season, the 12C GT3 was only made available to European-based GT teams and, aside from a handful of standalone race events in Abu Dhabi, Azerbaijan and Macau, raced in championships across Europe. The 12C GT3 is now available to all GT teams globally and, for the first time, also collectors and non-race users.
The 12C GT3 will continue to be raced by all active GT teams who competed in 2012. In addition to this, several new teams have now taken delivery of the 2013 model year 12C GT3 and are confirmed for the forthcoming season. Clearwater Racing join McLaren GT as a customer team and, as reigning back-to-back champions in the Asia GT Championship, the striking chrome, red and green livery of the 12C GT3 will wear the number 1. In addition to this, nine-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb has confirmed he will contest the FIA GT Series, and his team Sébastien Loeb Racing will run two examples of the 12C GT3. Loeb will be joined in the cockpit by McLaren GT factory driver Alvaro Parente for the six-date season.
The 2013-specification 12C GT3 features a number of changes, all of which are available as a package to existing car owners, and which are designed to offer enhanced drivability, reliability and efficiency, coupled with reduced complexity. The changes include a revised aerodynamics package, an upgraded ECU with a revised electrical system and alternative dampers.
The 2013 12C GT3 also benefits from an updated cooling system designed to optimise performance of the car in the more varied conditions found in global championships. These enhancements are evident through the updated bonnet and ducting, designed to ensure that the 12C GT3 can run competitively in higher temperatures than those experienced during 2012. The revised aerodynamic package will further improve the balance and tyre management of the 12C GT3.
The enhanced 2013 McLaren 12C GT3 costs £325,000, and is eligible for all FIA GT3-based race series.
