Muhlner Motorsport win the FIA GT3 class again at the 2010 Spa 24 Hours

Haring, Konstantinou, Peyroles and Vannelet drive to the Muhlner Team's 8th class win in the classic Ardennen event

Francorchamps. The Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium based Muhlner Motorsport Team have this year again achieved a class win in their home event, the Spa 24 hours.

The Muhlner Team, notably successful in endurance events, were running two Porsche 911 GT3- R in the event. The number 52 car was driven by Armand Fumal, Gianluca De Lorenzi, Jerome Thiry and Mark J. Thomas. Fumal (2005) and Thomas (2008) had both already achieved GT3 class wins with the team in this event.

The number 53 car was driven by Muhlner regulars Dr. Jurgen Haring, Taki Konstantinou and Gilles Vannelet, the three joined by the very experienced Arnaud Peyroles. Haring and Konstantinou have been driving for Muhlner Motorsport since 2008 in the ADAC GT Masters and in some events of the FIA European GT3 Championship. Vannelet won the FIA European GT3 Championship in 2007, Arnaud Peyroles won it in 2008.

In qualifying neither car did much mileage and did not join the chase for a good grid position, something which is pretty irrelevant to a 24 hour race. Positions 30 and 32 on the grid were thus not really reflective of the true performance of the cars.

Thus after the first stint both cars were already in the top 20 and after 6 hours the 52 was already in the top ten when a breakage in the drivetrain brought an early end to their race.

At daybreak the 53 was running in the top 10 and 4th in class -- given the large and high quality field for this year's event, not something which had been expected.

But it got even better -- with consistent good laptimes the 53 worked its way up into 3rd in the class and then problems befell the competition who had to make unplanned pitstops for repairs.

So after almost 20 hours, Haring / Konstantinou / Peyroles / Vannelet were leading the 21 car strong GT3 class and 5th overall.

When a few problems started to show in the gearbox/clutch, and given that two otther Porsches had shortly earlier had to change their clutch, Renate-Carola Muhlner decided to accept the loss of places in the overall race and slow the car down to get to the finish and ensure the class win.

Thus at the flag the Muhlner Motorsport team was 6th overall and had its 8th class win in the Spa 24 hours event.

"What a fantastic result, to win the class again in the strongly contested FIA GT3 class as privateer team with gentleman drivers against works competition. A 6th overall in such a competitive field with so many top works teams is also a huge success for us" was Bernhard Muhlner's evaluation of the result "however, I'm a bit disappointed that our other car, which was already up to 8th overall after 6 hours, had to retire with a technical problem in the drivetrain somewhere out on circuit. Otherwise we might have not just been celebrating our 8th win but maybe our 4th one-two...but no matter how well your prepare for an event, technical problems can still arise."

Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, round 7 in Brands Hatch

Favourites extend lead – pursuers stumble

Stuttgart. The three-way fight for the title of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland has turned into a duel. With his fourth win of the season in Brands Hatch, local hero Nick Tandy (Konrad Motorsport) shrunk the gap to points’ leader Nicolas Armindo. The Frenchman from Hermes Attempto Racing saw the chequered flag on the home track of his toughest rival in second place. With two races left on the calendar only seven points separate Armindo and Tandy – the two drivers who have divvied up all the victories between themselves at Germany’s fastest brand trophy series. At the same time, their closest pursuer, Uwe Alzen (Germany, Team Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark), was thrown back in the overall classification due to tyre damage.

Whilst the British pole-sitter Nick Tandy got away well at the start to increase his gap lap for lap and bring home an unchallenged victory, Nicolas Armindo had his hands full. Only in the first third of the race could the 28-year-old take a breather. After that, Armindo had to deal with the Dutch guest starter from Konrad Motorsport, Jeroen Bleekemolen, and his pursuer Martin Ragginger. For the Austrian from Schnabl Engineering the main goal was not to lose contact to the front-runners. But all hopes were dashed when he was sidelined in the twelfth lap. Bleekemolen went on to celebrate the third podium spot.

For the second time this season, Christian Engelhart brought home a well-deserved fourth place. Driving for MRS PZ Aschaffenburg, the German experienced various problems over the course of the year but at least now, on the season’s finish straight, he managed to move into eighth overall in the drivers’ standings. Snatching fifth in Brands Hatch, Stefan Wendt from the Schnabl Engineering squad underlined his top form in qualifying when the Carrera Cup novice from Germany turned heads with his fourth place.

Guest driver Stefan Rosina from Slovakia yielded sixth at his second Carrera Cup race this year, securing precious points for Förch Racing, a team new to the series this year. Trailing close behind Rosina was Robert Renauer. The German not only extended his fourth overall ranking but moves threateningly close to his teammate at Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark, Uwe Alzen. Alzen was the underdog of the race. Due to a puncture and the ensuing pit stop, he was relegated from seventh back to 13th place. With this, the double Carrera Cup champion holds on to his third overall ranking, but the duo at the lead have now moved out of reach.

Nick Tandy (winner): “What can I say? It doesn’t get better than winning from pole position, and unchallenged at that. The reason I’m sitting second in the points is because I had bad luck at two races. So, there is really just one goal now: We want to win the last two rounds!”

Nicolas Armindo (second): “Nick drove a very strong race at home. I had no chance to catch him. But our team today was fabulous, we’ve never tested here and still managed second. With just seven points separating Nick and I, the rest of the season is shaping up to be very exciting.”

Jeroen Bleekemolen (third): “From fifth place to the podium, I can be happy with that. But most of all I really enjoyed fighting with Nicolas and Martin.”

Round eight of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place on 19 September in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.

Special exhibition from October 1 through 7, 2010

The Porsche Museum exhibits the 918 Spyder Concept Study for the first time

Stuttgart. The Porsche 918 Spyder caused a global sensation on its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and Auto China in Beijing. This concept study will be exhibited for the first time in the Museum of Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, from October 1 through 7, 2010.

The Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG decided only a few weeks ago to put this high performance, mid-engined sports car into production. The innovative plug-in hybrid drive of the Porsche 918 Spyder produces the on-the-road performance of a purebred super sports race car, but with maximum efficiency and minimum emissions at the same time.

The Porsche Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 6 pm. Museum admission is € 8 for adults, € 4 for concessions. Children under the age of 14 go free when accompanied by an adult. Further information is available on the internet from www.porsche.com/museum.

Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, round 10 at the Italian Grand Prix

Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, round 10 at the Italian Grand Prix

Final duel in the Royal Park

Stuttgart. It doesn’t get much more gripping than this: The title of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup will only be decided at the final round on 12 October on the Grand Prix circuit in the Royal Park of Monza. René Rast or Nicholas Tandy – one of these two will be crowned champion of the world’s fastest international brand trophy series.

A glance at the points’ table shows that René Rast (Germany) is the clear favourite. Driving for Al Faisal Lechner Racing, the four-time winner this season leads by a 14-point advantage. On paper, this means that if Nicholas Tandy from Great Britain secures his third win of the season for his Konrad Motorsport squad, plus the two extra points for pole position, then René Rast would need to finish at least eighth to take the title.

Despite the difficult situation he faces, Nicholas Tandy is not yet throwing in the towel. Earlier this season he already clinched the BBS Rookie Classification as the best Supercup newcomer. But that’s not enough. “I want the title,” he says, “and one thing is certain. It’s not over until the flag drops. As long as I have even the slightest chance to win then I’ll do everything to do it. And my team will be supporting me every step of the way.” René Rast knows that under normal circumstances not a lot can go wrong in Monza. But, considering the large grid line-up at the last race of the season, he is not willing to place all his bets on the title. “There are 32 drivers at the start, most of them eager to win or at least finish on the podium. I’m expecting a lot of action on the track,” says last year’s winner in Monza. His tactic: “To start as far up the grid as possible and keep out of any trouble. Then it should work. In any case, I’m feeling confident.”

The 5.770 kilometre circuit in the Autodromo Nazionale is the fastest on the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup calendar. The few corners have illustrious names like Parabolica, Variante Ascari and Lesmo – and they’re a real challenge for all drivers. On the straights the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup reaches a speed of over 270 kph. In Monza, the fastest lap in Supercup history was posted: During qualifying in 2006, Austria’s Richard Lietz set pole position with an average of 186.770 kph.

Not only do the title contenders René Rast and Nicholas Tandy have a score to settle at the season final. Other drivers are determined to finish such a rousing season on a positive note. One of them is Jaap van Lagen from the Netherlands. Competing for Team Bleekemolen Harders Plaza, the Supercup returnee claimed third in Monaco and second in Spa – now he wants to crown his comeback year with a win. His compatriot Jeroen Bleekemolen shares the same goal. The title defender has spent this season commuting between the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and the American Le Mans Series. In the USA, he has already notched up four victories with his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, in Europe he has had to settle for three podium results. Another candidate for his first win of the year is the VELTINS MRS Racing pilot Jan Seyffarth (Germany), whose form has been strong recently.

The race in Monza on 12 September, with the young New Zealand driver Jono Lester at the wheel of the VIP-911 GT3 Cup fielded by Porsche AG, will be broadcast live by TV stations Eurosport (11.45 hrs) and Sky Sport 2 (11.40 hrs). Eurosport also televises highlights on Sunday evening in its “Motorsports Weekend” programme.

Porsche pilots head to season final as title favourites

Le Mans Series, round 5 in Silverstone, Great Britain

Porsche pilots head to season final as title favourites

Stuttgart. The final of the Le Mans Series is shaping up to be a real thriller. After three victories from four races this season, Porsche factory pilots Marc Lieb (Germany) and Richard Lietz (Austria) travel to the last round on 12 September in Silverstone as the clear points’ leaders and title favourites. Driving a Felbermayr-Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, they are determined to bring home the last three points from the traditional race track in the British Midlands that they need to successfully defend their GT2 class title. Meanwhile, Porsche has its sights on the manufacturers’ title.

Despite their comfortable margin, the 2010 Le Mans winners are not about to take the race in Silverstone lightly. “Right here last year we experienced just how hard it can be when you’re a hair’s breadth away from winning the title. And that’s why we are very cautious about making predictions,” says Marc Lieb, who has already won the Le Mans Series title three times. “In any case, we are very well prepared for the final and the fight against our strongest rivals from Ferrari.”

Richard Lietz’s pole position last year on the 5.141 kilometre Grand Prix circuit gave a clear indication that the track suits the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. “The flowing track layout with its challenging high-speed corners as well as the whole atmosphere make this race great fun,” says the Austrian. “Silverstone has a superb sports car tradition, and the enthusiasm of the British fans is an added motivation. Lately our qualifying results have not been as good as those of our rivals. We’re working hard on this so that we can take up the final race from one of the front grid spots.”

Driving the second 911 GT3 RSR of the German-Austrian Felbermayr squad, Martin Ragginger (Austria) and Christian Ried (Germany) head to the final ranking third overall in the standings. The two kicked off the season by pocketing a sensational second in Le Castellet and after yielding further top results are even contenders for runner-up honours. Like recently on the Hungaroring, they receive support in Silverstone from Porsche works driver Romain Dumas (France).

Just in time for the final, Porsche factory pilot Patrick Pilet and his French compatriot Raymond Narac made the breakthrough. In the cockpit of a 911 GT3 RSR fielded by the IMSA Performance Matmut team, they brought home third from Hungary, their first podium result this season, and moved up the overall rankings to now sit fourth. “At last we’ve been rewarded for all our hard work,” says Patrick Pilet. “We’ve looking even more forward to the final on this fabulous track. How wonderful would it be though to celebrate our first Le Mans Series victory in Silverstone?”

ProSpeed Competition is aiming for a good end to a difficult first season in this fiercely-contested championship. Contesting the last race for the Belgian squad are again Richard Westbrook (Great Britain), the FIA GT champion of 2009, as well as Porsche-Junior Marco Holzer (Germany).

The 1,000 kilometre race in Silverstone takes place on 12 September at 11.55 hours (12.55 hours CEST). TV station Eurosport broadcasts the race live from 12.30 to 13.45 hours and from 17.45 to 19.00 hours. Fans can follow the action per Live-Timing on www.lemans-series.com.

Facts and Figures

This is the Le Mans Series

Contested for the first time in 2004, the Le Mans Series (LMS) is open for sports prototypes and GT vehicles. The regulations are based on the rules of the Le Mans 24 hour race. Five championship rounds are contested this season on circuits throughout Europe. The races run over a distance of 1,000 kilometres, with the eight hour race in Le Castellet as the only exception.

The starting field consists of two different sports vehicle categories: Sports prototypes and standard sports cars. They are divided into four classes:
LMP1 class: Sports prototypes with up to 750 hp and a minimum weight of 900 kilograms (petrol vehicles) or 930 kg (diesel vehicles). Power to weight ratio: approx. 1.2 kg/hp.
LMP2 class: Sports prototypes with around 440 hp and an 825 kilogram minimum weight. Power to weight ratio: approx 1.8 kg/hp.
GT1 class: Considerably modified standard sports cars with up to 600 hp and a minimum weight of 1,200 – 1,250 kilograms.
GT2 class: Slightly modified standard sports cars with up to 460 hp and a minimum weight of 1,145 kilograms. The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR competes in this class.

All race cars start together but are classified separately according to the class. Points are only allocated for placings in each class. Championship titles are awarded for drivers, manufacturers and teams in all four classes. Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz won the GT2 driver’s title in 2009. In 2008, Porsche won the LMP2 title for drivers, manufacturers and teams.
