Pole for Ekström in DTM season opener, great comeback by BMW
Pole for Ekström in DTM season opener, great comeback by BMW
Hockenheim. The time of testing, speculating, waiting is finally over: the 2012 DTM
season got underway, traditionally at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. Packed
grandstands and summery temperatures provided a perfect backdrop for the first real
encounter of the three premium manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
In qualifying, Swedish driver Mattias Ekström came out on top with his new Audi A5
DTM and claimed pole position for Sunday’s season opener. Ekström completed the lap
of the 4.574 kilometres long track in 1:34.680 minutes and was classified ahead of
Mercedes-Benz driver Jamie Green from Great Britain. As a result, two times’ DTM
champion Ekström will be starting from first place on the grid for a DTM race for the
19th time in his career. “To start the season with pole position is the best thing that
could happen. It is like being at school: you learn, you do your homework and you now
see the result. There are no points for pole position, but in the race, I definitely have the
shortest road to the finish”, said ‘Eki’.
Second-placed Jamie Green was also very happy with the start of the season. “We have
done a lot of work over the winter and now, we know where we are. We are on a very
good way. One could see that it was really close between the three manufacturers and
you have to get everything spot on to be in front.”
BMW celebrated a great comeback. Dirk Werner from Hannover showed an
impressive performance and ended up third with his BMW M3 DTM. “This is an
incredible result. I never expected to make it into the final qualifying heat. Beforehand,
we already had a good feeling, but that it turned out that well is making it even more
beautiful”, said the overjoyed BMW driver.
Two Audi drivers, Italian Edoardo Mortara and Mike Rockenfeller (D) will be starting
from fourth and fifth place on the grid. Briton Gary Paffett ended up sixth with the DTM
Mercedes AMG C-Coupé.
Next to Werner, six further drivers are making their DTM debut at Hockenheim. British
driver Andy Priaulx (BMW) ended up seventh in qualifying, Adrian Tambay (Audi) from
France was classified twelfth, Canadian Robert Wickens (Mercedes-Benz) 13th, Joey
Hand (BMW) from the USA 16th, Augusto Farfus (BMW) from Brazil 19th and Spaniard
Roberto Merhi (Mercedes-Benz) will be starting from 20th.
DTM 2012 – Press Release No. 17 28th April, 2012
For this season, the format of the four-heat shoot-out qualifying was revised. After the
first 16 minutes’ heat (Q1), the drivers in 17th to 22nd place are eliminated. After
another eleven minutes (Q2), qualifying is over again for the six slowest drivers. After
the third eleven minutes’ qualifying heat (Q3), the field is reduced again by six drivers,
so that the four fastest drivers remain to battle for pole position in a single-lap
showdown.
FIA president Jean Todt was also on site and was impressed by the “new DTM”: “The
cars are very interesting. I have seen many things from which I can learn. The DTM has
a good mix of young talents and experienced drivers, who are also coming from
Formula 1.”
The first race of the season covers 40 laps and 182.960 kilometres and starts on
Sunday at 14.00 h. The ARD is broadcasting live from 13.15 h.

GT Open International: The Ferraris fastest in very first (and humid) taste of 2012
The Ferraris fastest in very first (and humid) taste of 2012
27.04.2012
Philipp Peter was the fastest in today’s free practice of the opening round of the International GT Open. The Austrian of Kessel Racing posted his time on session 2, on an almost dry track. Rain and wind have invited themselves on and off to the Algarve. First session was completely wet and saw Raffaele Giammaria (Black Ferrari) in P1 beating the AF Corse Ferrari of Vilander and the Manthey Porsche.
In session 2, the Villorba Ferrari of Montermini was second-fastest, just 4 hundredths behind Peter, preceding the other Ferraris of Vilander and Giammaria. The best Porsche, the Manthey one of Holzer-Tandy, was 6th ahead of the Villois Aston.
In GTS, the best time was for the Goodsense Lambo of Teixeira-Cunha, competing in the Spanish GT Championship ahead of the Autorlando Porsche of Mapelli-Hamilton and the AF Ferrari of Bizzarri-Rizzoli.
35 cars are present in Portimão, with the main absence of the Veka Ferraris of Versluis-Buurman and Versluis-Pastorelli, which suffered some damage last week-end in the DSC and will join as from next round. The car of Ramos-Giammaria, on this race, is being prepared and entered by Black Team, the former EdilCris.
They said…
Marco Holzer (Manthey Porsche):“Iam very happy to be in the GT Open. I knew little of it but I have been watching footage and got advise from my friend Richard Lietz, and I now know it is a very competitive series”.
Johnny Mowlem (Giudici Lotus): “The car is pretty new, we just tested once, and we still have a lot of work to do, on the engine and on the rear, to get the right performance out of it.”
Andrea Montermini (Villorba Ferrari): “I am very satisfied of how things go and the way we work with my new team mate Cochito Lopez. We are still discovering the car, which arrived pretty late, but the times are there”.
Alvaro Barba (Villois Aston): “I am discovering the car here, I had some little problems to adapt yesterday, but now it is ok, and the car is very performing quite well”
Miguel Ángel De Castro (Drivex Porsche): “It’s really nice to be at the wheel of the new Porsche RSR. We still have a lot of progress and work to do, but we’ll get there.”
Soheil Ayari (the reigning Champion, by mail): “We wish you a very pleasant first round and season. I miss a lot the championship. Hoping to come back in a short future in the most attractive GT Championship, I wish my friends Pilet and Narac, will make shine the colors of France!”

ROUTE TO: BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
The
WTCC competitors won’t have a break after this weekend’s race meeting
at the Slovakia Ring, as the next event takes place at the Hungaroring
on May 6.
This spectacular racetrack that is located 20 km North-East of Budapest, Hungary’s capital city, is home to the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986. The FIA World Touring Car Championship returns to the Hungaroring for the second time, after it visited it for the first time last year. That maiden appearance turned into a great success, also thanks to local hero Norbert Michelisz, whose popularity attracted an impressive crowd of Hungarian fans. Unfortunately Michelisz did not achieve the results he was aiming for, and although he claimed a brilliant second place in the first race, he spoiled his chances with a crash at the start of the second race and had to pit for repair. The fact that he set the fastest lap, despite his BMW car had suffered from extensive damage, proved that he could win that race. And this year he wishes to make up for that disappointment. In 2011 Chevrolet team mates Alain Menu and Yvan Muller shared race victories. |

THE LADA GRANTA IS READY TO RACE
The WTCC Race of Hungary will mark the comeback to the world championship of Avtovaz, Russia’s leading car manufacturer, with one LADA Granta Sport car driven by James Thompson.
Three years after their first participation in the WTCC – back in 2008 and 2009 with the 110 and Priora models – the LADA Sport team will take part in this year’s events at the Hungaroring and Portimão with the aim of evaluating a possible full season programme in 2013. The WTCC Granta Sport car has been designed and built at LADA Sport and is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo engine developed in France by ORECA. Thompson, twice a British Touring Car Champion and winner of four WTCC races, rejoins the team after he scored LADA’s first WTCC points with the Priora at Imola in 2009. The team are currently based at ORECA workshop in Magny-Cours, preparing the car for the first test just before leaving to Hungary. Team Principal Victor Shapovalov said: "We are all very excited at the eve of the first test and the first races. We are pleased to return to WTCC. The car looks nice and we expect it to be competitive. ORECA have just finished testing the engine on the bench and it looks strong and powerful. Unfortunately the project kicked off only in January; we work in a very tight schedule, and don't have the possibility to make a proper test programme prior to the first races." LADA Sport’s face a double commitment at the Hungaroring, because the Granta Cup makes its international debut appearing as a support series to the WTCC event. The Granta Cup car is the little sister of the WTCC machine, both are powered by a 1.6-litre turbo engine that delivers 240 and 310 bhp respectively. |

THE RETURN OF MICHEL VAILLANT
Michel
Vaillant, the fiction driver created in the Fifties by celebrated
Belgian artist Jean Graton, is ready to go back to action!
In November, five years after the publication of his latest adventure (24 Heures sous influence – 2007), the publishing house Dupuis will launch the news season of one of their most famous characters that was introduced to the WTCC drivers at Marrakech. Under the guidance of Jean Graton’s son Philippe, a trio of artists has been charged to face the huge task of renovating the look of Michel Vaillant and the other players of the saga. This mission accomplished, story writer Denis Lapière and artists Marc Bourgne and Benjamin Benéteau who will draw characters and cars respectively, will now focus on creating the first comic book of the new series that will be set in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

TUTUMLU TO SKIP SLOVAKIA RING
Isaac
Tutumlu will miss this weekend’s event at the Slovakia Ring, because
his BMW 320 TC car suffered from extensive damage at Marrakech ten days
ago.
During Morocco’s first race the Spanish driver clashed with Aleksei Dudukalo and then hit the wall. The incident sidelined him for the second race and, due to the long trip back home, Proteam Racing had no time to repair the car before the trucks left for the Slovak Republic. “It´s a shame; the Slovakia Ring is new for everyone and I should have used a new engine from BMW. I have no doubts we would have improved there, maybe it was a chance for repeating my results in Spain,” said Tutumlu and then added: “Now our target is to be back for Hungary, one week later. But this schedule does not help, as the team will go straight from Slovakia to Hungary, without going back to Italy. Anyway I hope my car will be repaired for Hungaroring, as I know the track from my Porsche Supercup days.” |

SUCCESS BALLAST FOR ETCC CARS
As
the FIA European Touring Car Cup competitors face their second event of
the season at the Slovakia Ring, they have also to cope with the
Success Ballast system that has been calculated on the basis of the
results obtained in the season’s opening at Monza.
The top five drivers classified in the Super 2000 and Single-Make Trophy classes are given 20, 15, 10, 5 and 5 kilos respectively; in addition all drivers receive one kilo per each point they have scored, while those who entered on a race-by-race basis are given an extra 15. As a result Fernando Monje’s SEAT León TDi (S2000) and Stian Paulsen’s SEAT León Cup (SMT) are the heaviest cars, both at 43 kilos. In the Super 1600 and Super Production classes, ballasts are cut by half. The top-three in the standings are given 10, 7.5 and 5 extra kilos, plus one per each two points scored. Race-by-race entries are laden by 7.5 kilos. In S1600 Kevin Krammes’ Ford Fiesta will carry 21 kilos of ballast, while Nikolay Karamyshev’s Honda Civic in SP will have 25 extra kilos on board. |

ADAC GT Masters goes dune bashing by the North Sea
ADAC GT Masters goes dune bashing by the North Sea
- Premiere for ADAC GT Masters at Zandvoort
- Record starting field with more than 40 super sports cars from 13 manufacturers
- Former Formula 1 track promises to deliver spectacular racing
ALPINA duo Lunardi/Martin face strong competition
Races 3 and 4 of the 2012 ADAC GT Masters promise to be high-octane affairs. The early championship leaders Dino Lunardi (33, F) / Maxime Martin (26, B) in their BMW ALPINA B6 are just two points ahead of Porsche duo Nick Tandy (27, GB) and Christian Engelhart (25, Kösching / Team Geyer & Weinig / Schütz Motorsport). "Zandvoort is a very narrow track with some sharp turns, so it's not ideal for our BMW ALPINA," says reigning champion Lunardi. "But I hope that we can play to our advantages on the many fast corners."
After a strong start to the season, Claudia Hürtgen (40, Aachen), the only woman driver to have won an ADAC GT Masters race, and Dominik Schwager (35, Eisenhofen / Schubert Motorsport) in their BMW Z4 will be among the favourites for the Zandvoort weekend. The pairing of Sebastian Asch (25, Ammerbuch), son of touring car legend Roland Asch, with Maximilian Götz (26 Uffenheim / kfzteile24 MS Racing Club) in their black Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will also be a combination to be reckoned with.
Frentzen and von Thurn und Taxis aiming to score first points
There will be several other prominent contestants aiming to get off the mark in the Netherlands after a shaky start to the campaign, including Albert von Thurn und Taxis (29, Regensburg / Reiter Engineering-Lamborghini Gallardo), winner of the 2010 title: "The track should suit us, so I'm very much hoping that things work out better for us at Zandvoort and that we can finish among the points." The young aristocrat went home empty-handed from the season opener, a disappointment also experienced by ex-Formula 1 and DTM driver Heinz Harald Frentzen (44, Neuss) and team-mate Andreas Wirth (28, Heidelberg / Callaway Competition) in their Corvette Z06, and by the dynamic duo of Christopher Mies (22, Heiligenhaus) / Christer Jöns (24, Ingelheim) in their Prosperia uhc speed Audi R8. Defending champion Alexandros Margarits (28, Cologne), together with Lance David Arnold (26, Duisburg / SCHÖNER WOHNEN Polarweiss Team HEICO) in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will also be keen to open their account in the Netherlands.
Ex-Formula 1 driver Tomas Enge to line up alongside Saudi prince
Making their debut in the Super Sports Car League are former F1 driver Tomas Enge (35, CZ / GRT Grasser Racing) in a Lamborghini Gallardo and Abdulaziz Al Faisal (28, KSA / Schubert Motorsport), a member the Saudi Arabian royal family, in his BMW Z4. The starting line-up also includes David Sigacev (23, RUS) / David Jahn (21, Speyer / Lambda Performance) in a Ford GT.
Local heroes hoping to please home crowd
There are also six Dutch contestants in the field, all intent on cracking open the champagne in front of their home fans. Local hero Christiaan Frankenhout (30, NL) from nearby Amsterdam partnered with Kenneth Heyer (32 Wegberg / HEICO Motorsport) in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has promised his supporters to post a respectable result. Equally intent on not letting their fans down are the only 100% Dutch outfit on the grid, DB Motorsport with a BMW Z4 driven by Jeroen den Boer (24, NL) and Simon Knap (23, NL). Making a guest appearance is sports car ace Jeroen Bleekemolen (30, Monaco) who grew up just a couple of miles away from the circuit. Bleekemolen will be sharing the Frogreen CO2 neutral 911 with Robert Renauer (27, Jedenhofen). Driving the new McLaren MP4-12C for MRS GT Racing, Patrick Huisman (46, NL) will be hoping for a good result in his home race. Meanwhile, Lamborghini driver Peter Kox (48, NL) has really knuckled down to some intensive work with his team-mate; the 2010 champion is sharing the cockpit of a Gallardo with current amateur champion Marc A Hayek (41, CH / Reiter Engineering) and is aiming to help the Swiss driver defend his title.
Aston Martin driver Poulsen leads amateur standings
The man they all have to catch in the amateur classification is Kristian Poulsen (36, DK / Young Driver AMR) in his Aston Martin. Hot on the heels of the Dane are Swen Dolenc (44, Maulbronn / FACH AUTO TECH) in the Porsche 911, supported by Martin Ragginger (24, A), and Carsten Tilke (28, Munich / Prosperia uhc speed) who shares an Audi R8 with former champion Christian Abt (44, Kempten).
As in previous seasons, all 16 races in the FIA GT Championship are broadcast live on the free-to-air channel kabel eins. Double debut for Audi in Belgium
Double debut for Audi in Belgium
• First WEC race for Audi R18 e-tron quattro and Audi R18 ultra
• Three new drivers in Audi Sport Team Joest
• Le Mans winning team to put four cars on the grid for the first time
Ingolstadt, April 27, 2012 – Audi will be using the second FIA World Endurance
Championship (WEC) round at Spa-Francorchamps on May 5 as a “dress
rehearsal” for the Le Mans 24 Hours as well. For the first time, two new vehicle
models have to prove their viability on one of the world’s most challenging race
tracks.
This date has a special significance on Audi Sport’s calendar of events. The second
WEC round not only signifies a double vehicle debut. For the first time in Audi’s
history, a race car will not be exclusively powered by an internal combustion engine.
The new Audi R18 e-tron quattro is ringing in a new era in motor racing, being the
first diesel hybrid sports car with all-wheel drive. Yet it is not only this concept that
pioneers a forward-thinking trend. A key prerequisite for making it reality in the first
place is ultra lightweight design – an Audi core competence. The hybrid model is
based on the Audi R18 ultra that features a largely identical design but is
conventionally powered by a V6 TDI engine. It is the lightest LMP sports car ever
designed by Audi. Two cars each of the two new models will be celebrating their
racing debuts in Belgium.
The cars’ debuts coincide with four other premieres. For the first time, Audi Sport
Team Joest is fielding four LMP1 race cars. 1999 last saw Audi put four vehicles on
the grid at a sports car race under a factory commitment. The models back then, at
Le Mans, were the Audi R8R and R8C, the “progenitors” of today’s sports
prototypes, albeit being fielded by two different teams. The other debuts: Marc
Gené, the newly signed reserve driver from Spain, is standing in for Timo Bernhard,
who is taking a break due to injuries from an accident. Also contesting their first
sports car race for Audi’s factory team are the previous test driver Marco Bonanomi
from Italy and the former DTM driver Oliver Jarvis from Great Britain.
Audi’s new signing Marc Gené has won the sports car race at Spa twice in the past
four years. The other Audi drivers are traveling to the Ardennes with zest and vigor
as well. Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish as the winners created a topnotch
farewell for the Audi R18 TDI at the WEC season opener at Sebring. By
clinching victory there they took the lead of the standings in the new FIA World
Endurance Championship and are now looking forward to their debut in the Audi
R18 e-tron quattro. Ranking just seven points behind them are Loïc Duval, Romain
Dumas and Timo Bernhard, who finished the event in Florida as the runners-up.
André Lotterer, who is competing alongside his colleagues from the Le Mans
winning team, Marcel Fässler and Benoît Tréluyer, proved what is possible by taking
pole and posting the fastest race lap at the season opener.
So, each of the four Audi driver teams has high ambitions on the 7.004-kilometer
roller-coaster circuit in the Ardennes. There is one thing they all aim to achieve for
Audi at the 6-hour race that starts at 14:30 on Saturday. Like the Audi R8 in 2000,
the R10 TDI six years later and the R15 TDI in 2009 that successfully made their
debuts at Sebring, and the “R15 plus” that won at Le Castellet in 2010, the
youngest generation of the R18 shall now start its career with a success as well.
Topics of the weekend
• How will the relative strengths between the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro and
the R18 ultra pan out?
• Can Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish continue to show their good
form from Sebring?
• In the absence of Toyota, who will be Audi’s strongest rival at Spa-
Francorchamps?
• How good are Audi’s new sports car drivers, Marco Bonanomi, Marc Gené and
Oliver Jarvis?
Quotes by the officials
Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “Like last year, Spa will be a ‘dress
rehearsal’ for us for the Le Mans 24 Hours. We’d been planning to compete there
with exactly the same teams as at Le Mans, in other words with all four vehicles and
the squads assigned to them. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to completely follow
our plan with respect to the drivers. Mike Rockenfeller is not available because he’ll
be running in the DTM at the Lausitzring. And Timo Bernhard isn’t completely fit yet
after his accident at Sebring. That’s why we’re giving reserve driver Marc Gené the
chance to contest a race. He’ll be driving together with Romain Dumas and Loïc
Duval in order to get used to the vehicle and to gel with the squad in case we should
be using him at the Le Mans 24 Hours. We’re firmly assuming that Timo Bernhard
will be in perfect shape to run again at Le Mans. Yet with such a large line-up of
drivers there’s simply a risk that one of them may not be one hundred per cent fit.
That’s why it’s important to have a reserve driver. For Marco Bonanomi and Oliver
Jarvis, Spa has the positive effect that as a team of two they have the chance of
driving more race kilometers than the teams of three drivers. So, Spa is an
important premiere for them – just like it is for our two car models, the R18 e-tron
quattro and the R18 ultra.”
Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “Everyone is looking
forward to Spa, yet everyone has the necessary respect for the race as well. Four cars
pose a challenge per se and on top of that we’re competing with two new types of
vehicles – the Audi R18 ultra and the e-tron quattro. We’ve got eleven drivers and
one of them is new. Timo (Bernhard) isn’t fit yet but we’re hoping to have him with
us again at the Le Mans pre-test. The cars have just been assembled. The
preparations are underway but the event will be a huge challenge for us. Toyota,
unfortunately, will be missing at Spa, which is really a shame. We’ll only be meeting
with our competitor at Le Mans. But there are many other good cars in the field, as
we could already see at Sebring. We had a very good season opener and will
obviously try everything we can to continue this string at Spa.”
Facts and quotes by the Audi drivers
Marcel Fässler (35/CH), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1
• Achieved his best sports car result to date as the runner-up at Spa in 2006
• Has previously won a 24-hour race at the circuit in the Ardennes
“Spa is one of my favorite tracks, which gives me a positive feeling. Plus, running in
the R18 e-tron quattro this year is very special anyway. It’ll no doubt be a great
experience and we’re all very excited. I’m very confident because we’re well prepared
and am looking forward to this endurance race.”
André Lotterer (30/D), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1
• Set the best time in qualifying and the fastest race lap at Sebring
• Last year’s Le Mans winner grew up in Belgium
“At Spa we’ll be driving the e-tron quattro for the first time. I’m very confident
because I thought the car was really superb in the track tests. I can hardly wait to go
to Spa. It’s a special track for me where I spent a lot of time even as a child and
teenager. Driving a sports car there is huge fun. I’m hoping for things to go better
for us than they did at Sebring. At least we showed a lot of potential there. Now
we’ll be giving everything again.”
Benoît Tréluyer (35/F), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1
• The Frenchman is running in a hybrid vehicle for the first time
• At Spa, the 2011 Le Mans winner will be competing for Audi for the third
consecutive time
“I’m looking forward to returning to Spa, especially in the new Audi R18 e-tron
quattro. This is a very important debut because for the first time we’ll see where we
stand with the hybrid compared to the competition. The comparison with the Audi
R18 ultra counts as well. On a track like Spa you can obviously expect the driving to
be huge fun – that’s fantastic for us drivers. I really like my R18 e-tron quattro.
Hybrid drive simply gives you an interesting sensation at the wheel.”
Dindo Capello (47/I), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2
• Clinched his fifth victory at Sebring in March
• Is the only current Audi sports car driver to have competed before in his career in
a Super Touring car with quattro drive
“Now I’m experiencing another debut with Audi, and for the first time in a world
championship. With the new R18 e-tron quattro Audi intends to prove its hybrid
technology in competition – and naturally with the aim of winning. In the past, Audi
was the first manufacturer to be victorious with a diesel, so the second WEC round is
an important race to which my team-mates and I are traveling as the leaders of the
standings. Audi wants to start a new chapter in motorsport history, and Spa is
exactly the right track for it.”
Tom Kristensen (44/DK), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2
• Celebrated his sixth victory at Sebring in March
• In 2003, won the 1,000-kilometer race at Spa in the Audi R8
“I can hardly wait for the second WEC round. We’re experiencing a premiere.
Looking back, the Audi’s premieres were always fantastic, from the R8 and R10 TDI
through to the R15 TDI. Now it’s the R18 e-tron quattro’s turn. We’ve again got a
new technology for proving on a challenging track like Spa. Allan (McNish), Dindo
(Capello) and I are traveling to the second race as the championship leaders after
giving the Audi R18 TDI at Sebring a superb farewell.”
Allan McNish (42/GB), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2
• Celebrated his fourth victory at the WEC’s inaugural event, the Sebring 12 Hours
• Third place has so far been his best sports car result at Spa
“It’s great to be returning to Spa as the leader of the standings after my fourth
Sebring success. Spa is the first race for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. My adrenaline
level has already begun to rise. When you test the car you get a feeling for it, begin
to understand it a little and try out a few things. But you really start to understand
its advantages only in a racing situation with respective weather and in the battle
with other competitors. We’ll certainly have a learning curve with such a new
system. The technology is brand new but we’ve got a good base. I love Spa with its
contours; the track perfectly suits my driving style, but I’m still waiting for my first
victory there. Obviously, we want to score as many points as possible and hopefully
give the new car a victorious debut.”
Romain Dumas (34/F), Audi R18 ultra #3
• Took second place at Sebring on the Audi R18 TDI’s farewell
• Started from the pole position at Spa last year
• Has already won the Spa 24 Hours twice
“At Spa, I’ll be running with a new team-mate. At Sebring, we saw that Timo
(Bernhard) and I quickly started to work together really well with newcomer Loïc
(Duval). I’m sure that’ll work out equally well with Marc (Gené). He has a lot of
experience in sports prototype racing and is intimately familiar with Spa. It’s a
shame that Timo isn’t able to run but under these circumstances Marc is no doubt
the best possible replacement. At Spa, we want to attack as best we can. I’m eager
to see how the relative strengths will pan out between the hybrid vehicle and the
conventionally powered car. I’m sure it’ll be an open race.”
Loïc Duval (29/F), Audi R18 ultra #3
• Is contesting the sports car race at Spa for the third consecutive time
• Finished as the runner-up right on his Audi premiere at Sebring
“It’s a nice feeling to compete at Spa. It’s a very unusual track with a layout that
practically all drivers love. It’s simply fun to drive there. This’ll be the first race for
us in the Audi R18 ultra. In Marc Gené we’ve got a new team-mate standing in for
Timo Bernhard who is unfortunately injured. I came to highly respect Marc as a
driver in the past. He’s joined the squad as a solid team player. For the first WEC
race in Europe, I’m wishing for the event to go as well as the premiere at Sebring
did. Obviously, it would be great to see all three Audi driver teams on the podium.
But it’s primarily an important race in preparation for the Le Mans 24 Hours.”
Marc Gené (38/E), Audi R18 ultra #3
• The newly signed reserve driver is contesting his first race for Audi
• In 2008 and 2011, the Spaniard clinched overall victory at Spa
“For me, this is an honor and I’m delighted to be competing for one of the most
successful brands in history, Audi. And Spa is one of my favorite tracks. It’s a
beautiful circuit for a race with an LMP1 car. I didn’t want to lose touch with this
class because I particularly like sports cars. I’m happy that this opportunity with
Audi came about. I immediately received a warm welcome. Dr. Ullrich, my driver
colleagues and the team have been giving me this positive feeling. I couldn’t wish
for more on tackling this new challenge. I’m hoping to be able to return as much as
I’ve been receiving.”
Marco Bonanomi (27/I), Audi R18 ultra #4
• Is making his sports prototype racing debut with Audi
• Has been familiar with the R18 since last year as a test driver
“Finally, I’m experiencing my racing debut in a sports prototype. I’ve been waiting
for this moment for a year and a half. This is an important point in my career and
I’m making this debut on one of my favorite tracks. I was on the grid on this track in
Belgium in Formula 3000 and the World Series, and finished on the podium several
times. So, I know the track well but in the sports prototype in traffic with other
vehicles it’ll probably be a different thing. In any event, I feel the motivation in
every fiber of my body.”
Oliver Jarvis (28/GB), Audi R18 ultra #4
• After running for an Audi customer team at Le Mans in 2010, is contesting his
first race with Audi Sport Team Joest
• Is sharing the R18 ultra with Marco Bonanomi at Spa
“I’ve been looking forward to my first run as an Audi factory driver in the R18 ultra
at Spa for a long time. We’ve got a new car and I’m forming a new driver team with
Marco (Bonanomi). At Le Mans, we’ll be joined by Mike (Rockenfeller). There’s a lot
to learn for us at this race that we’re using as a test for Le Mans. But it doesn’t mean
that Spa is not important as a single race. It’s a good opportunity for the whole
driver squad to grow together. Working together with the engineers is another key
aspect. In the competition, we obviously want to battle for a podium place but as a
relatively new member of the sports car family I know that I’ve still got a lot to
learn.”

Romain Dumas about Spa-Francorchamps: “Spa immediately shows its extreme
differences. The first corner, La Source, is a hairpin where the inside wheel may
easily lock. This is followed by a downhill stretch to the fast Raidillon-Eau Rouge
passage where a good car runs flat-out. You can’t see the exit of the corner behind
the hilltop. Then the next key place follows. The straight is ideal for slipstream
driving. You can still overtake before the track narrows. The Pouhon double lefthander
is exciting. You brake as you enter the first part and then take the second
half flat-out. The way back is incredibly fast too. In fourth gear you turn onto a
straight that leads to the Blanchimont corner which you take in sixth. Spa is my
favorite track in Europe.”
